Hi, it’s Craig here with RJ Painting. Today we are in Algonquin, Illinois doing some commercial painting. We are at the St. John’s Lutheran Church and we are painting their activity center. So today I am going to talk about the prep we do on metal surfaces, specifically in this case the downspout you can see behind me.

You can’t tell now, but these downspouts were covered in rust. So what we do is we sand all the rust off, grind it off if we have to, and we prime it with a rust inhibiting primer. In this case, we use the Sherwin Williams Kem Bond rust-inhibiting primer.  Unfortunately, the primer doesn’t stop the rust from coming back, but it will inhibit it and slow it down. If you did want to stop it, really your only option is to either sand blast them or replace them. We haven’t painted this yet, but once the guys come through, we will be spraying this with Sherwin Williams super paint to get a nice clean look.
